Antonio Banderas’s Movie Review: The Skin I Live In: A lighter effort from Pedro Almodovar

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 07:55 AM PDT

More pot-boiling from Spain’s master of convoluted melodrama, Almodovar’s adaptation of Thierry Jonquet’s novel Mygale is a gender-bending sci-fi hybrid starring Antonio Banderas as a plastic surgeon and grieving widower. Holed up in his Toledo mansion with his tart-tongued housekeeper (Marisa Paredes) and a beautiful imprisoned woman (Elena Anaya), he develops a new synthetic skin which can help burn victims. The revelation of a gruesome back story seems, often, to serve as much for laughs as for dramatic heft in what is one of Almodovar’s lighter efforts.

Daniel Radcliffe to party about style’s night out with Columbia Sportswear & Jeffrey New York

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 06:53 AM PDT

What do you get when you pair one of New York's most high-end retailers with one of America's most classic outdoor sportswear companies? A Fashion's Night Out launch party with Daniel Radcliffe, it seems.

The "Harry Potter" star — currently appearing on Broadway in "How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" — will appear Thursday at Jeffrey New York to celebrate the launch of the Columbia Sportswear + Jeffrey New York collaboration.

The collection — the brainchild of Jeffrey founder Jeffrey Kalinsky — will feature Columbia staples such as down jackets, fleece pullovers and snow boots but with an added premium touch. The goal was to create high-end outerwear that would fit in to a designer wardrobe (think of it as an American Moncler), with Kalinsky acting as both the collection's visionary and its muse.

"This collection was really inspired by Jeffrey Kalinsky's personal style and his tendency to integrate high quality down outerwear and polar fleece into his own wardrobe," Columbia Sportswear Creative Director Kathleen McNally told The Huffington Post. "We were able to work on developing some high-end outerwear while keeping the silhouettes very simple, the design streamlined and premium fabrics. We are really looking forward to unveiling the line at New York's Fashion's Night Out."

Radcliffe and "How to Succeed" co-star Rose Hemingway will co-host the launch party Thursday at Jeffrey New York in the Meatpacking District, where designer Monique Pean will be DJing.

One item from the collection, seen below, is a down jacket featuring an ultra-lightweight ripstop exterior and 800 fill-power goose down stuffing that retails for $495.

Kelly Clarkson release her new Album ‘Stronger’ covers

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 05:33 AM PDT

Kelly Clarkson is always clutching something on her album covers, and her new one doesn’t stray from the trend. (On Thankful it was her sweater sleeve. Breakaway saw her hands on her either side of her head. KC had a firm grip on her red dress on My December, and she was tugging her leather jacket on All I Ever Wanted.)

Kelly Clarkson release her new Album 'Stronger' covers

On the cover of Stronger, the “Mr. Know It All” singer’s fifth album, a black-and-white Kelly is wearing a gold bracelet and ring combo while making a fist and placing her fingers at her mouth. In other words, the same girl who sings sweet love songs is also a tough cookie who can punch you out if you get on her wrong side.

“I ended up naming the album Stronger mainly because the entire album is about empowerment and just strength overall,” Kelly said during a Livestream chat last week. “I love singing songs like that. I love being sassy. I love having attitude. I love raining on boys’ parades!”

Clarkson’s official site notes today that the release date for Stronger has been bumped up by one day, and the album will now be out on Monday, October 24 (the same day as Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto).

Do you plan to pick up a copy? (Take a good look at that fist and thing before you answer.) Let us know below, or by voting in our fall album poll in the right sidebar!

Demi Lovato ‘Unbroken’: Fall Preview

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 05:28 AM PDT

Demi Lovato’s year started off, shall we say, less than stellar, as she (quite publicly) suffered a nervous breakdown, causing her to leave both her world tour with the Jonas Brothers and her Disney show Sonny With A Chance to enter a treatment facility. But Demi’s second half of 2011 looks like it’s going nowhere but up, as the 19-year-old pop star plans to release her third, highly anticipated studio album Unbroken, featuring a huge lead single and a crop of hot guest appearances and producers. Jump below to find out everything you need to know about Demi’s latest LP in our Fall Music Preview.

Demi Lovato 'Unbroken' Fall Preview

ALBUM PRODUCERS: Timbaland produced and appears on “All Night Long”, which also happens to feature his supertight amigo Missy Elliott. Back in January, Timbo posted a video of himself listening to Demi’s music, saying he was “very impressed… I’m not an easy person to please.”

Other producers include Toby Gad (Beyonce, Selena Gomez), Emanuel Kiriakou (Hot Chelle Rae, Jason Derulo) and Ryan Tedder (Kelly Clarkson, Adele, OneRepublic).

WHAT TO EXPECT: In addition to Missy and Timbaland, look out for guest appearances by Iyaz, Jason Derulo and Dev (whose debut LP drops the very same day as Demi’s). Thematically, however, prepare for a lot of introspection, as Demi is still working out her problems and fighting her inner demons, which include self-harming, an eating disorder and struggling with bipolar disorder. “With my new album, I’m hoping to provide inspiration for girls everywhere who are going through the same issues I’ve faced,” she recently told Seventeen magazine. “I think this will come through in a lot of the material.”

Still, it’s not a 15-track therapy session — there’s a few tunes that are more about having fun than looking deep within yourself. Ryan Tedder told E! News that his collaboration with Lovato on “Who’s That Boy” carries a totally different vibe than that of “Skyscraper”. “I think everybody wanted to hear her talk about, and this is basically flipping it 180, saying, ‘Oh, by the way, I’m still also just young and want to have fun.’ There’s even like a little rap feature on it.”

TOUR PLANS: Demi is starting things out slow, performing at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York on September 17, and LA’s Club Nokia on September 23.

OUR THOUGHTS: The girl has one killer voice, and now she finally has the A-list material to put it to good use. It’s difficult for many young female pop stars to transition successfully from squeaky-clean Disney kid to respected adult recording artist. But so far, Demi’s doing a spectacular job, and she’s doing it without having to show some skin or sing about hooking up in a club. Both in her professional career and her personal life, we’re rooting for her all the way.

Need to know what else you’ll be rocking to the next few months? Check out the other albums in our Fall Music Preview — Lady Antebellum’s Own The Night, Katy B’s On A Mission, Dev’s The Night The Sun Came Up and The Bangles’ Sweetheart Of The Sun.

Emma Watson’s modeling for Lancome fragrance ad

The advert follows the Harry Potter star along the banks of the Seine before cutting to a flashback of the actress in a bookstore. Bowled over by the somewhat perfect Parisian sales assistant, Watson leaves her trilby behind in the shop.

Returning to the purpley haze of 'real life' Watson and the Parisian gent (played by male model Cyril Descours) meet again and as he attempts to return the hat to its rightful owner, a magical moment occurs. Watson said: "What I love about this story that we put together is that it's almost fate, like chance, that brings the two of them together… You never know what's going to be around the corner. That's what we wanted to get across in the fragrance: that life is magical with little surprises."

Jessica Alba & Honor Marie outing together

Stepping out for a bit of shopping, Jessica Alba and Honor Marie were spotted at the Westfield Mall in Los Angeles, CA. With her hair in a sloppy bun, the “Machete” mama sported a floor-length dress while her little mini looked adorable in a colorful frock as the duo walked past the paparazzi.

Aside from the midweek retail session, Ms Alba has been working to get her baby weight off and jump started this week with a hike alongside her good friend, Jacqui Lang Khastoo. When the weather didn’t exactly cooperate, Jessica tweeted, "Thx @jacqui_lang 4 the hike. Although a bit dirty and smelly it was a nice way to start the wk off. J"Answering back, Jacqui replied, “Consider the sandstorm a free exfoliating treatment!”

Aishwarya Rai pushed and resentful with Kareena

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 04:54 AM PDT

Controversies cannot stay away from Madhur Bhandarkar's film 'Heroine'. First Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was let off the film when Amitabh Bachchan announced to the world that she was pregnant. And now Ash is not happy with Kareena's decision to accept Heroine.

Aishwarya Rai pushed and resentful with Kareena

There's enough of bad blood between the Kapoors and the Bachchans ever since Karisma Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan's engagement was called off. And now, if rumours are to be believed, Aishwarya is upset with the fact that Bebo decided to walk into a project that Ash was meant to resume after her maternity leave.

Kareena denied any knowledge. She has been quoted by The Times of India as saying, "Madhur and the film corporation were very keen that I should be in Heroine. The film was written for me originally.''

Apparently, the series of incidents have made Aishwarya so unhappy that she has become stressed and doctors have advised her complete bed rest.

Aishwarya is expecting her first baby, due in November 2011. But her doctor has allegedly advised Ash to be on complete bed rest. The actress is going through a very crucial phase in her pregnancy and has been asked to follow a healthy diet. Aishwarya is presently concentrating only on her health and following healthy eating habits.

The entire family is by her side and taking immense care. Abhishek Bachchan also wants to spend as much time possible with wife Aishwarya. He is not undertaking too many projects to be with her and it was reported that he has asked for leave from shooting for Yash Raj Films when the due time arrives. Reports in Times of India say that the actress is being treated like a princess these days.

Aishwarya herself has detached herself from all projects and has gracefully returned the signing amount for 'Heroine'. She is neither doing any films nor any ad projects right now.

The generation next of Bachchan family is on its way. But will we see the beautiful lady back on the silver-screen once the baby arrives?

Beyonce: Dated, Married, Then Got Pregnant…

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 04:52 AM PDT

In case you missed it: entertainer, artist, actress and fashion designer Beyonce Knowles and her husband, Jay-Z (Sean Carter) (best described as a music mogul) are expecting their first child. Good for them. Congratulations! That's where we should all leave it, but of course that doesn't feed a 'social issue".

Beyonce Dated, Married, Then Got Pregnant

So, how do you make a celebrity couple's very public announcement about an everyday event into a social issue? You turn the mother into the poster girl for the "wait until marriage" cause aimed at would-be-pregnant teenagers.

Great, except that reports from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention show that teen pregnancies for all races declined steadily between 1991 and 2005, jumped slightly between 2005 and 2007 and then declined again between 2007 and 2009. In other words, the general trend among 15-19 year old teenagers is to wait, at least until they are adults. The same report showed that while 40 percent of births in the U.S. in 2007 were to unwed mothers, teenage mothers accounted for less than a quarter of those births (compared to half in 1970.)

To say that single motherhood is now common is a fact, not a backlash against marriage. In truth, we only care about the marital status of the mother because most babies born to single women are "unplanned." As the CDC report highlighted, these babies are thus more likely to have "low birth weight, be preterm and die in infancy." There are several socioeconomic factors that go into this perfect storm including availability of contraceptives, prenatal care, and even post-natal care but all of these factors are allayed by marriage only if you consider that it means a more stable (read: financially sound) household.

Yes, teen birth rates in the U.S. remain up to nine times higher than in most other developed nations. Yes, teen pregnancy results in an increased socioeconomic burden. But, marriage is not a silver bullet to these ailments. (After all, divorce rates also fell between 2000 and 2009, at the same time that a higher percentage of children were being born out of wedlock.) What does this tell us?

Dakota Fanning are outfitting to start classes again

It’s that time of year again, and even celebrities like Dakota Fanning are gearing up to begin classes again. The “I Am Sam” actress was spotted picking up some take-out food in New York City today (September 6) on her way to school.

Miss Fanning carried a snazzy umbrella and donned rain boots to deal with the nasty Manhattan weather. In career news, Dakota has signed on to star in a new biopic called “Effie” about a young bride named Euphemia Gray who marries critic John Ruskin. But when Ruskin is unable to consummate the marriage after five years, Effie falls in love with a painter.

Gossip » Soulja Boy "Deeply Sorry" For Anti-Army Rap

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 03:03 AM PDT

Saying he “let my words get the best of me”, Soulja Boy wrote an apology letter today after coming under heavy fire for perceived anti-military lyrics.

While a line like “F**k the Army troops” is open to some interpretation … it’s clear what the message was in his recently-released rap, “Let’s Be Real.”

In any case, the star just posted a blog entitled titled, “I Am Deeply Sorry To All Members Of The United States Military Services And Their Families.”

Gossip » Soulja Boy
Soulja Boy

Several military vets lashed out against Soulja Boy after he released the rap. One former sergeant even released his own rap dissing the celebrity.

He tried to explain where he was coming from, but for the most part, Soulja owned his mistake and came off sincere on GlobalGrind (dot) com.

Soulja Boy comes right out and says that in criticizing the military, “not only did my words come out wrong, I was wrong to even speak them.”

Soulja’s apology letter appears:

As an artist, I let my words get the best of me. Sometimes there are things that we feel, things that we want to express, and when we put them on paper and speak them out loud, they can come out wrong.

When I expressed my frustration with the US Army, not only did my words come out wrong, I was wrong to even speak them. So, I write this to give my sincerest apology to all members of the United States military services, as well as their families that were offended by my most recent lyrics.

As a young man who grew up in the post-9/11 era, I have watched our country fight two wars that seem like they are never going to end.

Soulja Boy – Let’s Be Real

I have seen thousands and thousands of our brave men and women get killed in battle and often times, I think for what? A lot of people in this country are struggling to make ends meet and I think a lot about what if we had never gone to war.

Where would our economy be? Our schools, our after-school and work programs, our streets? I mean, damn, 48 people got shot in New York City just this past weekend … in 3 days … I’m not saying that it is just because of a bad economy, but at a certain point we have to take care of our own people.

In no way would I ever want to offend those who are protecting our freedoms … a lot of homeboys who I grew up with, a lot of people who come from the neighborhoods we live in … In no way do I want to hurt any of our honorable soldiers who put their lives at risk, regardless of how they feel about the two wars we fight in.

I am just frustrated that we haven’t been able to bring you all home quick enough and my frustration got the best of me. I am deeply sorry.

~Soulja Boy
