Antonio Banderas: The skin i exist in is more Almodovar than Almodovar

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 09:51 AM PDT

‘I don’t have trouble with the idea of getting older, I never did,’ says Antonio Banderas, nonchalantly. ‘I actually feel more comfortable; finally I can start getting rid of that image of “the Latin lover” and all that s***. It could be a burden.’

Antonio Banderas The skin i exist in is more Almodovar than Almodovar

Actually, Spain’s sexiest export might have a way to go yet: at 51 he is still alarmingly swoon-inducing. But his latest role, reuniting at last with director Pedro Almodóvar for The Skin I Live In, is a welcome reminder that he’s more than just a handsome face.

Now edging away from a purely Hollywood career that has seen him make his biggest impression as cartoon characters, The Skin I Live In finds Banderas embracing the dark side that Almodóvar tapped into so effectively when the pair worked together on five films in the 1980s.

In a thrillingly sick, morality-warping movie, he plays a psychopathic plastic surgeon who plots an extraordinary revenge when his daughter dies. The teasingly delayed twist sends you reeling. ‘He [Almodóvar] made me play some notes that I didn’t even know I had,’ admits Banderas, in his signature deep, heavily accented purr.

‘And now that I turned 51 this year, it’s very beautiful. It’s almost like he opened the gate for me into adulthood. And it had to be Pedro Almodóvar again: why is that, after so many years? He says our re-encounter has been “a celebration”,’ he laughs. In the 21 years that have passed since the pair worked together, Banderas notes appreciatively how Almodóvar’s work has matured.

‘This movie is more Almodóvar than Almodóvar,’ he says. ‘It’s all these reflecting mirrors all the time, attacking you as a spectator, and I recognised that from our work in the 1980s, that pushing to the limits. But he became more profound in the content, and more austere in the form. I said to him before shooting: “You’re becoming Japanese.’”

Not that everything ran smoothly between them, as Banderas jovially admits. ‘In his relationships with the actors, he didn’t change so much; he’s as difficult as he used to be – and I thank God for that. After three or four days of rehearsals, it all came back to me like the last thing we did was a week ago.’

If the Spanish word ‘simpatico’ is notoriously difficult to translate into English, Banderas seems to be its living embodiment. He chats from the start with the amiable conviction that we will get on brilliantly; laughing, joking, staying cheerfully candid. He’s upfront about his patchy success rate with picking Hollywood projects.

‘I have to recognise I just made wrong decisions,’ he says. ‘I didn’t have a reference point – I was the first Spaniard over here and I always had a sense of provisionality. They’d offer me something, I’d say: “OK, I’ll do this and then I’ll go back to Spain.” Boom, and another one came, and I kept going until I realised: “Hold on I have to stop this.”’

He doesn’t seem to harbour many regrets, however. ‘I know other actors have a concept of career but I actually don’t have one,’ he says. ‘I think it can be damaging. You start thinking “Oh, I cannot do this because what would people think?” I do movies because I love it. Who cares when I die what people are going to say about what I did? I’ll be dead.’

Banderas is also keen to return to the stage but plans for him to follow in the footsteps of a previous Hispanic trailblazer, Anthony Quinn, and take the role of Zorba on Broadway are currently on hold due to his overloaded schedule.

‘I created myself as an actor in the theatre; movies came as an accident years later, because of Pedro,’ he says. ‘And these days, when we’re recording ourselves all the time, it has a very interesting value – it’s the art of the ephemeral; you have to see it there.’

So will we see him gracing the London stage sometime soon? Banderas’s English is fast and fluent, though it’s charmingly obvious at times he’s still thinking in Spanish and translating into English, and he’s still rather bashful about it.

‘Some projects have been offered but I chicken out,’ he admits. ‘I have so much respect for British theatre audiences; but maybe the language… They offered me Cyrano de Bergerac and I’ve been thinking about that – but Cyrano talks a lot.’

Cheryl Cole would have liked to become a close acquaintence of Britney Spears

Cheryl Cole wanted to become a "big sister" to Britney Spears. The 'Fight For this Love' singer thought she could help Britney – who suffered a public meltdown, culminating with her shaving her head in 2007 – become "normal" again, according to her ex-minder Craig Balkam.

A friend told how Craig had said: "She used to talk about Britney Spears. She kept saying she wanted to help Britney – that she thought she could become like a big sister to her and make her normal again after all her crazy behaviour."

Cheryl, 28, was not as big a fan of eccentric star Lady Gaga, however, because of her provocative stage antics. The source added to the Sunday Mirror newspaper: "She had a thing about Lady Gaga too. She loves Lady Gaga's music but disapproved of her stage show. She's quite shy and not that comfortable with overly sexual behaviour. She's very proper and ladylike."

Cheryl's had attempted to establish herself as a star in the US, but it backfired when she was sacked from the judging panel of talent show 'The X Factor' after only four days of filming earlier this year. She has since returned to the UK, where she has kept a low profile and reportedly reunited with her ex-husband, Ashley Cole.

Cheryl had confided in Craig that she had long felt like a "prisoner" and longed to turn her back on life in the public eye. The source added: "Cheryl kept saying she wanted to get out of showbusiness. She said she had enough of being a prisoner in her hotel room – that was a phrase she used a lot. "She said wanted to be a normal person again. But at the same time she was very keen to crack it in America – as though she was torn between the two."

Demi Lovato back to the stageAfter spending nearly a year on hiatus from music, Demi Lovato is returning to the stage for her fans. Lovato will play two shows in September in promotion of her new record, Unbroken, being released September 20. Her first show will be at The Hammerstein Ballroom on 9/17 and the second at Club Nokia on 9/23.

“These shows, basically…are thanking my fans for being so supportive throughout this entire journey, “ she told Ryan Seacrest.“ This is the first time I will be onstage in about a year, which is kind of unfathomable for me because I’ve been performing nonstop since I was fifteen. Now, I’m getting back onstage, and this will be the first time I’ll be performing a concert after everything has happened.”

“I think, one, it will be really interesting to see how nervous I am before I get up there,” she added. “But I’m already so excited. I’m already so pumped. I can’t wait to see everyone out there in the audience, and I think it’s going to be a really good show. I’ll also be playing all of my new songs from my new record.”

Lovato, 19, made her official return to the stage at the Do Something Awards, where she performed “Skyscraper.” The singer says the song helped her gain a wider audience.

“I feel like it definitely opened up my audience a little,” she said of “Skyscraper.” “Because I was no longer just hearing from a younger demographic and it really inspired me more to make music. Because it just took off and had its own journey. It was just incredible.”Tickets for Lovato’s first two shows go on sale to the general public on Friday, August 26, on Ticketmaster.

Emma Watson 'frail regarding her looksSpeaking on the set of her latest shoot for i-D, Watson explained how she and the photographer Mariano Vivanco came up with the character of a French maid, which she had to portray.

She said: "This is the second time I've worked with Mariano. He's like my naughty big brother. We do our own thing, leave the world behind and go off to create and invent stuff together,""Being myself is a lot of pressure. I feel a lot more insecure being Emma than if I take on a character."

"I wore a little bit of everything for the shoot, including the beautiful Azzaro dress that I ended up wearing for the Lancôme event. Mariano was going crazy, chasing me around the garden, while I was pulling on different dresses and turning every which way. She continued: "The more I do this, the more I learn what makes a photograph. I love fashion photography, I love partnering with photographers rather than sitting there like a vegetable."

Jenna Jameson attending Dancing with the Stars Season 13?

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 01:15 AM PDT

Maybe this whole Dancing With the Stars set makeover is really about turning the show into a burlesque club. DWTS has had its share of sex tape stars, from Kendra Wilkinson to Pamela Anderson, and even co-host Brooke Burke and pro Karina Smirnoff have posed for Playboy. So why wouldn’t DWTS cast sexy Jenna Jameson, a.k.a. “The Queen of Porn,” and arguably the most famous female adult film star in the world?

Jenna, now a 37-year-old mom retired from the porn world, is the latest casting rumor to hit the circuit, courtesy of Gather. They checked out her Twitter account and found her following DWTS judge Carrie Ann Inaba and pro Tony Dovolani.

This could mean nothing, but it could also be a sign of Jenna getting close with the DWTS cast. (Also, the retired porn star isn’t following any other DWTS pros or judges on Twitter, which she would probably do if she was just a fan.) Is Tony finally bringing his sexy back, after toning things down for sensitive-and-demanding partners Kate Gosselin and Wendy Williams and pretty-young-thing partners Melissa Rycroft and Audrina Patridge?

Either way, we’ll find out the truth on all the casting rumors on Monday, Aug. 29 when the official Season 13 cast is revealed during Bachelor Pad.

Hot but weird is the best way to describe this Jessica Alba sex scene. The scene between Jessica Alba and Casey starts off with him basically beating her, but in the end they get involved in a passionate sex scene. This is one of those scenes where you can't look away yet feel just a little bit dirty for continuing to watch.

As for the new Marc Jacobs offering, Oh, Lola is described as having "top notes of effervescent raspberry, frais des bois and pear, a heart of peony, magnolia and cyclamen, and a drydown of vanilla, sandalwood and tonka bean."

Having been released this month, Dakota told WWD of the gig, “Every time one of Marc’s fragrances comes out I run to the store to buy it. The moment I was asked to be a part of the Oh, Lola campaign, I was so humbled and said yes immediately.”

Meanwhile, Jacobs dished on his latest scent, “We recolored the bottle and changed the juice. This Lola is more of a Lolita than a Lola, but we weren’t going to call the fragrance Lolita. Lola is more seductive; Oh, Lola is sensual, but she’s sweeter.”
